Introduction：
With rapid growth of population and social economy, fresh water resources crisis will become the world’s second largest environmental problem which is only next to the global warming. China is a country of water shortage with big population. Coastal regions especially in the North are severely lacking in water. As a technology to increase water source, desalination is inevitable trend to solve water-lacking in coastal cities. According to National Special Plan of Seawater Utilization, the desalination capacity in China for 2010 will reach to 0.8 -1 million tons per day, the forecast desalination capacity for 2020 is 250-300 M Ton/D.
Water resources for per person in Tianjin are only 160m3. Water shortage has been the most important factor to restrict the development of economy and society in Tianjin. At present, the desalination capacity in Tianjin is 5 M Ton/y, and the desalination capacity for projects under construction is up to 60 M Ton/Y, the capacity of direct use of seawater is 1.4 B Ton. The forecast desalination capacity in Tianjin for 2010 is 0.5 M Ton/D, over 150 M Ton/y, the forecast capacity of direct use of seawater is over 4 B Ton. With reform and opening-up in Binhai New Area, there is huge demand for high-quality water sources in Tianjin. Binhai New Area will need several million tons water everyday in the future.
To promote the development of desalination and seawater resources utilization in China, Tianjin Municipal Government and International Desalination Association (IDA) have jointly hosted International Desalination Forum & Exhibition in Tianjin in 2004 and 2006, which achieved great success. Tianjin Municipal Government and IDA will jointly host 2008 Desalination and Water Reuse International Forum & Exhibition (Tianjin, China) at the end of Oct. 2008.
This event is an integration of seminar and exhibition, which invites expertise, scholars from home and abroad. The conference provides a platform of technology communication and cooperation. This event also shows the advanced technology and equipment in the field of desalination and water reuse. It offers a platform for enterprises from home and abroad to show self-image and capability.
